Covid pandemic locked us inside, putting a halt to our activities with the street and slum children. But life needs to go on and new ways need to be devised. So Shubhakshika decided to continue working with beggars, ragpickers and other neglected children innovating new strategies like the following:
Taking classes on phone has proved a successful replacement for actual class. We did come across some road blocks like non availability of smart phones and WiFi with some families. But we used basic phones and organised conference classes, used audio messages for teaching and home work. The project will continue till the situation gets normal.
To keep the children indoors and to engage them in interesting activities the NGO distributed drawing copies, colours and play material. They were encouraged to make whatever they liked. Guidance was given on phone. The children have made lots of interesting paintings which are displayed as an exhibition in the gallery.
Taking all personal safety precautions, the NGO staff reached out to the children to impart information about how they can keep themselves safe despite living in jhuggi clusters. It was encouraging to know that the children willingly adopted new safety means and also coaxed their parents to follow the safety directives.
The NGO distributed masks and sanitisers to the families in slums and to street children.
During the lock down approximately 400 migrant people were provided cooked meals every day.
Shubhakshika NGO distributed food kits to about one thousand migrant families in Shahbad area, Badli and various Jhuggi clusters in Rohini.
Medical kits containing masks, sanitizer, soaps and sanitary napkins were distributed to the deprived families to support them to fight against the virus.
The NGO staff assisted the migrant labourers in Shahbad and Rohini area to fill up e-coupon for temporary ration card.
